Breast Augmentation Questions
Denver, Colorado
Who is a good breast augmentation candidate?
Breast augmentation surgery is a very safe and popular choice for women who are in good health and want to enhance the size, overall shape and contour of their breasts. It is also a good choice for women whose smaller breasts have begun to sag due to childbirth or age. Lastly, it is a viable option for women whose breasts are uneven or otherwise different in size or shape.
What should I expect during breast augmentation surgery?
It is usually performed under twilight anesthesia on an outpatient basis. A small incision is made either around the nipple, under the arm, or under the breast. Incision locations will be determined by the patient's individual circumstances and by Dr. Slenkovich's expert recommendations. The implant is placed according to individual patient circumstances and Dr. Slenkovich's preferences, the incisions are sutured and the breasts are bandaged.
What are breast implants made of?
In the United States, two types of breast implants are approved for use during breast augmentation surgeries: silicone and saline. Dr. Slenkovich uses both types with equal success.
Saline implants are filled with a saline (salt and water) solution that is safest should the implant rupture or leak. They can also be filled after placement. Silicone implants have a textured exterior and are filled with a cohesive gel that is designed to maintain its shape over a long period of time. Which type of implant is right for you should be discussed during your initial consultation with Dr. Slenkovich.
How are the implants placed?
There are three methods of implant placement: sub-glandular, partial sub-muscular and complete sub-muscular. Dr. Slenkovich's preferred method is sub-muscular placement of the implants. With this type of placement, the majority of the implant is placed behind the chest muscles (pectoralis muscles).
This method involves the least amount of risk of capsular contracture (hardening of the surrounding breast tissue) and rippling. It also provides the advantage of an internal bra of sorts because the muscle tissue adds extra support underneath the implant. This is also the most preferred method in terms of being able to still obtain accurate mammogram readings.
