How to Choose a Plastic Surgeon

It is very important for the success of any procedure you are considering that you trust in and communicate with your surgeon.

You should carefully compare providers to make sure that you investigate their experience and credentials thoroughly prior to making any final decisions. Your safety and the outcome of your procedure depend on a comfortable, non-threatening environment in which you feel at ease.

Board Certifications and Memberships

A qualified plastic surgeon is, at the very least, board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.  This certification indicates that the surgeon has training in a medical or surgical specialty. Membership in the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons indicates that the surgeon has significant experience in cosmetic surgery. This membership is extended by invitation only.

Hospital Privileges and Facility Accreditation

Be sure that the plastic surgeon you are considering has been approved for hospital privileges at a reputable hospital that evaluates the surgeon's training and competency.  If the surgeon operates in any facility other than a reputable hospital, check to be sure the facility is accredited, licensed by the state and Medicare-certified.

Gather Information

Word of mouth is still one of the best ways to investigate a surgeon’s reputation. Ask your primary care physician, friends and family members what they know about a certain doctor. Or, ask them for names of doctors they would recommend. Ask for before and after photos of patients who have undergone the procedure you are considering. If possible, speak to some current patients and ask their opinions.

The Consultation

Scheduling a consultation does not commit you to working with that specific surgeon. Make a list of questions about the doctor's experience, the procedure, the cost and anything else you can think of to ask during your consultation. Note how thoroughly your questions are answered. Any reputable cosmetic surgeon will be happy to answer all of your questions truthfully and in detail. If not, you should continue your search.
