Planning ahead for your cosmetic surgery procedure will help to shorten recovery, reduce stress and reduce the amount of post-operative discomfort you experience. You will likely have to make a few alterations to your lifestyle and diet while recovering. Everything you need to know about your follow-up care will be discussed with you prior to your surgery date to allow you to properly prepare for your return home.

Preparing for Your Recovery Period

A good start to preparing for your recovery is to stock up on supplies you know you will need during your stay at home.

Dr. Slenkovich will provide post-operative instructions. You may even need to stay in bed for a week or two following surgery.  The following are some items you may want to consider keeping handy:

• Cold compresses – Bags of ice, gel packs or even packages of frozen vegetables aid in relieving inflammation and sooth sore areas
• Sterile gauze pads – The use of sterile gauze pads is another way to control any bleeding and prevent infection by placing gentle pressure on the affected area. Gauze also reduces the amount of bandages and band-aids that may stick to sensitive skin.
• Extra bed and pillow covers – You may need to change these more frequently during your healing, so it is wise to keep them accessible.
• Disposable wash cloths – A damp wash cloth is the easiest way to clean the incision area and to sooth sores or rough skin.
• Mild laxative – Some medications cause constipation, so it is wise to keep a stool softener handy to keep your system balanced. High fiber and lots of fruit are natural aids for reducing constipation.
• Handheld showerhead – A shower head that you can easily maneuver to different areas will reduce the amount of extra movement required to wash your hair and body.
